M4 · Mapping Your Stakeholders

This activity helps you identify and analyse the stakeholders involved in your Change Initiative. It aims to strengthen your understanding of stakeholder power, influence, and interest, both within and outside your university.

Activity Overview

This asynchronous session has two parts. Please complete both to prepare for the in-person module on stakeholder engagement in March 2026.

1) Download and Complete the Stakeholder Mapping Presentation

Download the Stakeholder Mapping Presentation and complete it electronically or print it out to fill by hand. This is a self-reflection exercise — you will not need to hand it in. Think about the stakeholders related to your Change Initiative project:

- Slide 2: List your stakeholders by category:

a) The team directly involved in your project
b) Your internal university stakeholders that have power over, influence, or interest in your project
c) External stakeholders outside your university with power, influence, or interest in your project

- Slide 3: Rank those stakeholders in terms of how much power and interest they have in your project.

To support your work, you can watch a short video introducing the stakeholder mapping technique: Video - Stakeholder Mapping Technique

2) Contribute to the Shared Stakeholder Brainstorm

Once you have completed your individual stakeholder mapping, help other participants to fill out the list of stakeholders for different categories of engagement! Review your external stakeholders and identify whether any belong to one of these categories:

- Funding agencies and/or donors

- Other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)

- Industry / Private sector

- Alumni

- Government

- NGOs / Community organizations

Then, open the shared Google Slides and add the general name of that stakeholder on the slide that corresponds to that category. We will use this collaborative stakeholder brainstorm during the in-person Module 4 session.
